Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery

Class: Chestnut Year: 2022 - 2023

Year 1 and 2 had an amazing trip to Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery on Tuesday 27th October. We took part in a specially designed workshop based around the work of Joan Miro. The children started the day with a portrait hunt around the Museum, and really impressed the staff with the discussions about the different paintings. We were then lucky enough to see an original Miro portrait and meet the owner, we learned that he bought the piece for £12000 from a gallery in Paris. He was also able to share with us the inspiration behind the painting and was interested in the children’s opinions of the portrait. The children worked together to create a large painting full of Miro and surrealism symbols, this was great fun and very messy! Finally, they produced their own self-portraits inspired by Miro using collage, paint, fine liners and pastels. It was great to see how their understanding and ideas developed through the workshop. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed exploring the different exhibits (especially dressing up!). Since returning to school, the children have written thank you letters to the Museum and drawn together all their Miro knowledge to create final pieces of art for the topic.
