At Addmore we believe that PE and School Sport (PESS) plays an important role in the development of our children. Our PESS curriculum has been devised to sure that children’s skills and confidence are developed whilst ensuring knowledge progression and sequencing of concepts is endorsed throughout.

It is our intention for children to enjoy physical activity and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Our PESS curriculum offers opportunities for them to try out many diverse sporting activities, encouraging them to discover their talents and have a life-long love of sport. Our PESS curriculum also positively encourages children to share, respect, support, trust and work together.

The use of external sports coaches (alongside the continuing professional development of school staff), ensures PESS is delivered to a clear and structured timetable, in line with the National Curriculum, whilst also being creative and fun.

Through the framework of the National Curriculum 2014, physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities;
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time;
  • engage in competitive sports and activities;
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Our aims in PESS are:

  • to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination;
  • to develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success;
  • to encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations;
  • to develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities;
  • to increase children’s ability to use what they have learnt to improve the quality and control of their performance;
  • to teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise;
  • to develop the children’s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination.

PESS is a foundation subject, taught in blocks through PESS skills themes. Through these themes our children will develop their knowledge and understanding of the subject. In our Early Years settings PE is taught as part of the Foundation Stage curriculum: Physical development. This is one of the seven areas of learning in the Foundation Stage.

Our Federation is committed to taking part in ‘The Daily Mile’ each day, encouraging children to become active every day and challenging them to improve on their own personal bests.

In addition to the school PESS curriculum our students regularly have the opportunity to attend local sports festivals and local cluster fixtures which take place at different times throughout the year. Being in a federation with our sister school allows further opportunities to create teams for competitions which as two very small schools we might not otherwise have the pupils for. These events enable children to use the skills they have acquired during their PESS lessons within a competitive environment. It also gives pupils the opportunity to work within a team, developing their social and citizenship skills.

We integrate our Curriculum Drivers into all of our units of work. PESS supports the delivery of our Curriculum Drivers: 

  • Exploring Opportunities – We enhance learning by taking part in educational visits/competitions as well as welcoming visitors to our school for talks and demonstrations. E.g. PE specialists.
  • Outdoor Education - We take every opportunity to plan lessons that take part outdoors. This could be in our school grounds or the local community.
  • Christian Values - Our Christian Values underpin all that we do in our school and exemplify the qualities we hope to instil in our pupils before they leave us. PE enables us to reinforce our Christian Values e.g. Perseverance, trust, courage, respect – through co-operative team games.
  • Learning for Life – We want our children develop a love of learning, so that they continue to be curious and learn throughout their lives. We aim to promote a love of learning by introducing our pupils to a wide variety of sports.
  • Our Place in the World – We want our pupils to be considerate, kind and thoughtful citizens and to value all life and our planet. PESS plays a part in this driver by promoting healthy lifestyles, including physical and mental health.
